TV showcase for former theatre studies student

Red in Tooth and Claw

Some of you may remember former theatre studies student Chris Fittock – staff certainly will. We last saw Chris here at the Workshop Theatre recording ‘Tunnel’, a play for radio. Since then his play ‘Red’ was produced by The New Works theatre company and toured to Liverpool, Glasgow and London in 2006, and was later published by Nick Hern Books.  Chris went on to become Literary Director of The New Works until 2008.

His new play, ‘The Dreadful Hours’, is due to be on at the Everyman theatre in Spring 2010, in a co-production with Tmesis Theatre (www.tmesistheatre.com).  The piece combines physical theatre with text, and is devised with, and performed by, Tmesis Theatre, who are Elinor Randle and Yorgos Karamalegos, in collaboration with Javier Marzan from Peepolykus.

More immediately, Chris has written an episode for Channel 4’s ‘3 Minute Wonder’ series, which showcases three-minute TV programmes in the middle of the channel’s weekday primetime schedule.  These are ordinarily documentaries, but four playwrights were commissioned by the Liverpool Everyman Theatre and Lime Pictures to write short dramas to mark the 150th anniversary of Darwin’s ‘On the Origin of Species’.

Chris’s episode is titled ‘Red in Tooth and Claw’ and looks at the concept of survival of the fittest in a contemporary context.  It features Eileen O’Brien and Kevin Harvey, and was directed by Paul Riordan.  It’s on Channel 4 on Wednesday 16 September at 7.55pm.
