The Workshop Theatre Poem 2007-2010

The Workshop Theatre Poem 2007-2010

It’s 10am the workshop is gonna go on for hours
But if I dressed as a wizard I’d have magic powers
Italian fascists aren’t on the module for physicists
And biologist would never know that Hamletmachine’s a bitch

And I’ve still got splinters from House Seven’s furniture and flats
But what better way to spend a weekend than making paper hats?
The spirits of Pinter and Boal will watch over our future paths
And messy nights in Wire and Hi-Fi always were a laugh

We had a snooze on the Union steps just before noon
It seems like I spent half my degree just simply booking rooms
Without our business Opposite’s would close in a week
I just handed in my essay, and god I need a drink

We are Workshop Theatre kids, now and forever
We are Workshop Theatre kids, and it’s been a pleasure
To act beside you, to argue with you, to devise a surreal play
We did it the workshop theatre way

Are you feeling Oppressed? Well hell so am I!
So let’s drop down to Dry Dock and then we’ll touch the sky
At least when you see Futurism you also get your dinner
Did you know Virginia Woolf wasn’t a very good swimmer?

For a time Studio 2 was white on the walls and the floor
It’s 4.30 for God’s sake don’t forget to lock the door!
We took over TG and I was touched by a Bad, Bad Santa
Our year’s OK but Humphrey McColl is by far the best dancer

Find props amongst the basement’s grime and mountains of dust
Simon Swift’s not giving this week’s lecture, so I’m really not that fussed
The 2 Eds playing women really has the power to enchant
And no mere wooden door can hold back Amy Marchant

I’ve never known a man who knew dirtier jokes than Coupe
But then I’ve never known nicer people, and that’s the fucking truth

We are Workshop Theatre kids, now and forever
We are Workshop Theatre kids, and it’s been a pleasure
To act beside you, to argue with you, to devise a surreal play
We did it the workshop theatre way

Anyone remember first year?  It’s a lifetime ago
And second year’s now memory we’re feeling so old
And 3rd year went so fast I swear it took one blink
We’ve just finished practical essays and god we need a drink

I have two questions:

1. Can Michael Arthur hear this?  And…
2.  Why does DJ always play a rapist?

So thanks to Basil, Jan, Sarah and our technical guru Lee
So thanks to Tim, Mark, Lourdes, Helen and of course Steve
We are Workshop Theatre kids, now and forever
We are Workshop Theatre kids, and it’s been a pleasure
To act beside you, to argue with you, to devise a surreal play
We did it the workshop theatre way

Every time I see a purple chair it’ll make me think of you
Every time I see you, I’ll think of purple chairs
